Books Like Star Trek: Crews, Friendship, Strange New Worlds
What like Star Trek actually means
Star Trek premiered on NBC on September 8, 1966. Sixty years on, what people miss when the season ends is rarely the ship. It is four things. A crew of different kinds, human and not, who disagree and still trust each other. A strange new world every week, with rules of its own. Friendship carrying the drama, so that the argument between two people on the bridge matters as much as the thing outside the window. And a problem that gets solved by figuring it out, with fighting as the last resort rather than the first.
Books like Star Wars give you the war. Books like Star Trek give you the away team. A good one has all four ingredients. The six below do, at different ages and tones.
Six books that pass
- A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L'Engle, 1962. Three children and three strange beings cross worlds to rescue a father. The crew is mismatched, the worlds are stranger each time, and the enemy is defeated by thinking and love, not force. All ages.
- Have Space Suit, Will Travel, Robert A. Heinlein, 1958. A teenager, a small girl, and an alien called the Mother Thing, carried across the galaxy to a trial where humanity itself is judged. Optimistic, clever, and clean. All ages.
- The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, Becky Chambers, 2014. A mixed species crew on a ship that bores tunnels through space. The most Star Trek novel of this century, built entirely on the crew getting along. Adult in places.
- Redshirts, John Scalzi, 2012. A comedy about the crew members who always die on away missions, and what happens when they notice. Hugo Award for Best Novel, 2013. Adult language.
- Spock's World, Diane Duane, 1988. An actual Star Trek novel, and the best door into the tie-in line. Vulcan's history and a vote on leaving the Federation, with the original crew.
- Omar & Ali: The Key to Orulenthia, Adil Bhatti, 2025. Two brothers from New Jersey are pulled through a portal to Orulenthia, a planet of megacities under a red giant sun, and fall in with Vaan, a warrior scholar, Nysha, a fierce warrior, and Ytelthuun, Vaan's closest friend. The crew forms across species, the world has telepathic beings and vehicles guided by thought, and the drama runs on who trusts whom. 243 pages, no profanity, read by adults and teenagers.

Which one to buy
Want the bridge banter, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy in a room: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, or Omar & Ali if the room includes a twelve year old. Want the humor: Redshirts. Want Vulcan: Spock's World. Want something for a family that watches Strange New Worlds together: A Wrinkle in Time, Have Space Suit, Will Travel, or Omar & Ali, which is the only one of the three written this decade.
If you want the crew and the friendships but also the scale of a war, Omar & Ali is the overlap. The planet is under a tyrant, Lord Thaarn, who rules by fear, and the brothers' alien friends are rebels. The away team feeling and the rebellion feeling are in the same 243 pages.
What people get wrong
- Buying Star Wars books for a Star Trek fan
- Different appetite. Star Wars is war and rebellion, Star Trek is crew and exploration. If you want both in one, Omar & Ali has them, from the crew side first.
- Assuming tie-in novels are all bad
- Some are. Diane Duane's are not. Spock's World is a real novel that happens to be set on the Enterprise.
- Thinking Trek-like needs a starship
- It needs a crew. Omar & Ali's crew moves by hovering vehicles guided by thought, giant gliders, and winged beasts the size of gliders. The feeling is the same.
- Giving The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet to a thirteen year old
- It is an adult novel. For a family, go with L'Engle, Heinlein, or Omar & Ali.
- Waiting for the final season to read anything
- Season five is six episodes and has no date yet. The books are here now.
