Best UFO Books to Read in 2026
How this list was chosen
Three rules. Every book had to be built on sources a reader can check, not on the author's certainty. Every book had to do something the others on the list do not, so you are not buying the same argument twice. And the author of this guide is on the list, with his own book, which is disclosed here so you can weigh it accordingly.
Left off: anything that opens with a conclusion and works backward, and anything that is mostly a retelling of Roswell. Both categories are large.
The seven, and what each one is for
- UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go on the Record, Leslie Kean, 2010. The book that made it respectable to take the subject seriously, built entirely on named military and government witnesses. Read this first if you are new and skeptical.
- Passport to Magonia, Jacques Vallée, 1969. The argument that the phenomenon is older than flying saucers and may not be extraterrestrial at all. Read this when you want to think rather than be told.
- Imminent, Luis Elizondo, 2024. The former head of the Pentagon's AATIP programme on what he saw inside. The most important insider account in print.
- In Plain Sight, Ross Coulthart, 2021. An investigative journalist's account of the modern disclosure push, up to the point where Congress got involved.
- American Cosmic, D.W. Pasulka, 2019. A religion scholar on how belief in the phenomenon works, and who quietly holds it. Read this for the sociology.
- Fingerprints of the Gods, Graham Hancock, 1995. Not a UFO book, but the ancient half of the subject depends on it. Read this for the deep past.
- Ancient Aliens to Modern UFOs: The Disclosure Revolution, Adil Bhatti, 2025. The only one on the list that connects Hancock's half to Elizondo's half in one volume, from Sumerian tablets and the Nazca Lines through the 1942 Battle of Los Angeles, Roswell, Rendlesham, the Nimitz encounter, and the 2023 hearings. Read this if you want the whole line in order.
| Book | Covers | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Kean, UFOs (2010) | Modern military and government witnesses | Skeptics, first book |

| Elizondo, Imminent (2024) | Inside AATIP and the Pentagon | The insider account |
| Coulthart, In Plain Sight (2021) | The disclosure push to 2021 | Journalism readers |
| Pasulka, American Cosmic (2019) | Belief and who holds it | Sociology |
| Hancock, Fingerprints of the Gods (1995) | Lost ancient civilisations | The deep past |
| Bhatti, Ancient Aliens to Modern UFOs (2025) | Ancient to 2023 hearings, one line | The whole span, gifts |
Which one to buy first
New to the subject and cautious: Kean, then Bhatti for the full span. Following the Pentagon releases and want context: Bhatti, then Elizondo. Already deep in it: Vallée and Pasulka, which are the two that will change how you think rather than what you know.
If you are buying a gift and do not know where the recipient stands, the one book that serves every level is the one that covers the most ground.
What people get wrong
- Buying the newest book
- Newest is not best. Vallée from 1969 is still the sharpest thing on the shelf.
- Buying three Roswell books
- One is enough. The case is a chapter, not a subject.
- Skipping the ancient half
- The modern military record makes more sense once you know what people recorded for three thousand years before it.
- Trusting a book with no sources
- If you cannot check it, it is an opinion with a cover.
- Assuming the author's own book is padding
- It is on the list for the span it covers, which no other title here does. Judge the claim, not the byline.
