What to Read After Disclosure Day
What is real and what is invented
The plot is fiction from the first frame. There is no meteorologist, no cybersecurity expert, and no single conspiracy waiting to be exposed.
The premise is not fiction. The United States government ran classified programmes to investigate unidentified aerial phenomena, the best known being AATIP. The Department of Defense officially confirmed the authenticity of Navy UAP footage. In July 2023, Ryan Graves, David Grusch, and Commander David Fravor testified under oath before Congress about encounters and about programmes to recover craft. Since May 8, 2026 the Pentagon has been publishing declassified UAP records at war.gov/ufo, with the third batch released the same day the film opened.
So the honest answer to "is it based on a true story" is: no, but it is based on a true situation.
| In the film | In the real record |
|---|---|
| A meteorologist and a cybersecurity expert | Navy pilots, an intelligence officer, and a former programme head |
| One cover up, uncovered in days | Decades of classified programmes, disclosed over years |
| A single revelation | Sworn testimony in 2023 and rolling file releases since May 2026 |
| Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth | Ryan Graves, David Grusch, Commander David Fravor |
| Answered by the end | Still open |
The question the film leaves you with
Spielberg said at CinemaCon that his own theory is that UAP might be us, travelling back from the future. The film does not commit to that or to anything else. It sends you out asking what the record actually shows, which is the right question and the one the film cannot answer because it is a film.
That question has an answer, and it is long. It starts with Sumerian tablets and Egyptian monuments, runs through the 1942 Battle of Los Angeles and Roswell, and ends at the Congressional hearings. The film compresses all of that into a feeling. A book can lay it out in order.
What to read, in order
Start with Ancient Aliens to Modern UFOs: The Disclosure Revolution by Adil Bhatti, because it is the one book that covers the entire span the film gestures at, from ancient records to the 2023 testimony, built on declassified documents and sworn statements rather than speculation. Then, if you want the insider account, Luis Elizondo's Imminent. Then read the files themselves at war.gov/ufo, which will make far more sense after the first two.
What people get wrong
- Searching for the true story the film is based on
- There is none. There is a true situation. Different thing.
- Assuming the film reveals something new
- Everything in the backdrop was public before it opened.
- Reading the Pentagon files cold
- They are fragments. A history first, then the files.
- Treating Spielberg's future-humans theory as the film's claim
- He said it at CinemaCon. The film takes no position.
- Buying a novel next
- If you want to know what is real, the next book has to be non fiction.
